The bowling ball you are feeling is probably the baby settling down. You don't really feel early dilation or effacement, only the cramping or contractions which are causing it. At 36-37 weeks, a first time mom usually isn't dilated and there is no reason to check unless you have been cramping or bleeding. When you are checked, 2 fingers of one hand are placed side by side and are inserted into your vagina until they reach the cervix. It can be painful for some women if the exam is rushed, lubricant not used or your cervix is very posterior. Try to breathe deeply and slowly with your mouth open and keep your legs relaxed. Also don't be afraid to ask your doctor to be gentle. If it hurts, ask your doctor to stop. If he is having a hard time with the exam chances are you are not dilated enough to really matter at this stage in your pregnancy. Most Group B tests are done by simply swabbing from the outer edge of the vagina to the anus along what is called the perineum. There isn't any pain involved with it. Good luck!

I asked, and the doctor said they wouldn't check until 38 weeks. The Group B strep is basically just a big cotton swab and they wipe you with it. When they check for dilation the doctor/midwife/nurse will put a finger or two inside you and feel up high for your cervix. If your cervix is still high, they may use their other hand to push down on your belly to try and reach it. It can be painful, but mostly it is just a lot of pressure and really uncomfortable.
The bowling ball feeling is probably just because the baby has dropped really low. This may or may not have caused you to dilate yet. I was barely dilated to 1 cm at my 40 wk appointment, and I didn't really change until I went into full blown labor almost a week late! Just keep in mind that you could go into labor anytime - or it could be another month (not what you want to hear, I know). Whenever it happens, good luck and congrats!

When checking for dilation they just insert 2 fingers inside of you, same as they did when they did your pap smear, it really is not that uncomfortable depending on your doctor, i never had pain with any doctor doing an internal, but the midwife i used was really bad at it, i wanted to kick her it hurt so bad.
Good luck

I went today, I am 35 and 5 days. I did an internal, and the Dr checked my cervix. Usually this starts at 36weeks, but I started it slightly early. If they are doing the strep b, they will more than likely to a check on your cervix. I thought it hurt 5x what a pap feels like! But maybe that is just me!! I was only 1cm dialated, but my cervix was effaced and thinned.

I had my test for that 2 weeks ago and it was only a long q-tip rubbed on the outside. It was never inserted.
Being checked for dilation is not as painful as a pap smear. There's no chunk taken out of your cervix, and they only check with fingers, not the speculum.

They usually do Group B Strep around 36-38 weeks.
Its a little early to be checking for dialtion unless you've been having weird symptoms or have been to the ER lately for something. They'll usually start checking for dialation/effacement around 37 or 38 weeks. When they check for dialation, they have to check manually. For some women, its more uncomfortable than others (mine hurt like crap, because I have a very small outlet and my cervix was high and posterior).

well, sorry to put it blunt but it jsut feels like two fingers in your hoohalol but it is a little uncomfortable you could ask. sometimes they don't really like to check for dialtiong in case of infection. when they do the group b strep they just rub a q tip around it. it wouldnt hurst to ask though. the person who said wait cuz you're probably not dilated is worng. i started dialteing at 32 weeks and had my sona t 36 and i had no complications my whole prengancy
PS they dont stick their whole hand up there they only stick two fingers but your cervix is so sensitive that it hurts a little

No, wait till you're like 38 weeks or more. You're most likely not dilated at all, so you'll feel disappointed if you're not. And yes, it hurts. It hurt bad to me. They stick their hand way up there. It was terrible! I was only 1 cm dilated and 50% effaced at about 39 1/2 weeks.
