In 1907, John I. Taylor, then the Red Sox owner, gave the team that name because of the red socks they wore.

Before that they had no official nickname. They had been called other things like the Americans, Pilgrims, and Somersets (when they were owned by Charles Somers), but those were all names the papers used to distinguish between them and the N.L. team in Boston. None of them were an official nickname.

He used Sox instead of Socks or Stockings because it would fit better in a newspaper headline. He may have gotten that idea from his father, who was the publisher of the Boston Globe at the time.

Back in the day -like the turn of the century the leagues were the Americans and Nationals. Boston had different names for the different leagues, none that were official nicknames. The Nationals team was the Cincinnati Red Stockings (which moved to Boston) and wore red stockings, changed names to Beaneaters, dropped the red stocking look. Another name change to Bees, then Braves . From Cincinnati to Boston, Milwaukee to Atlanta ,and with the red-stocking look up for grabs the Americans snagged it, and started wearing them and calling themselves the Red Sox in the 1908 season, Cincinnati got another Nationals team and called them what ? The Reds of course

An owner who bought the team saw that they wear red sox before when they were the pilgrims and owned by someone else. he gave them the nickname the red socks which eventually became red sox to make it more hip and became te official name of the team.

I don't have a link, but don't you think that's a corny name. I mean, the New York Yankees are named after the nickname for the North in the Civil War, and the Sox are named after a smelly, disgusting article of clothing.
