Could be that their nest got flooded out or ortherwise disturbed.

That's actually how I find nests of ants to kill them. If I suspect their are ants in a particular area of the garden (for example, there's a trail going from one place to another), I either get a hose and slowly soak the area or turn on the soaker hoses I have throughout the plant beds. I let everything flood out a bit (about 10 minutes) and turn the water off. If there is an ants nest anywhere in the flooded area, the ants will come streaming out by the thousands to get away. Then I spray them, wiping out the nest.

Something has probably disturbed the nest and they are trying to save or protect their eggs, I once saw a group of ants enter an anthill hill of a different kind f ants and start carrying away the eggs from that ant hill. Talk about a disturbance !!!

It could be any number of things. One of them could be the nest is disturbed in some way either by nature or human. I have also seen them do this if something sweet like soda is spilled. They can smell the sugar and are trying to find it. They could also be swarming on crumbs that are to tiny to see
