Are there areas of the city that should be avoided? We will be attending a concert at the Exit/In and will be staying in a hotel, but I'm not sure what is the best area to reserve one in.

The old west end where Vanderbilt University is not a bad area of Nashville. It's close to where your going for your concert, and it's not too far from Broadway and 2nd Avenues where a lot of the country bars and tourist attractions are located. There is a couple of Hampton hotels near your concert at the Exit/In:

Another part of town that most visitors gravitate to is the Opry Mills area of town. Check out this interactive map to help you out with attractions and hotel accommodations in this part of town:

The Major attractions in this area are:
The Gaylord Gaylord Opryland Hotel & Convention Center
The Grand Ole Opry
The Grand Ole Opry Museum
Opry Mills Mall
The General Jackson Showboat

The Opryland hotel is a must see. It's open to the public and has three HUGE atrium domes with gardens, waterfall, shops, and restaurants. Bring your camera, and your comfortable walking shoes, your going to need them.

The Opryland hotel is a bit pricey, but located nearby on Music Valley Drive are some lesser priced hotels. Basic rule of thumb here in Nashville is the further away you get from the downtown area, the Opry Mills area, and the Nashville International Airport areas of town, the cheaper your hotels get (for the most part).

As for area's to avoid in Nashville (in my personal opinion) are the north Nashville Dickerson Road area, and southeast Nashville Nolensville Road area just south of the downtown area.

I hope you enjoy your trip to Nashville!

Microsoft Bob has it right- just stay in the area of the Exit/In. It's over on Elliston Place one block of West End where several hotels are located and where Vanderbilt University is. It's a fun neighborhood to walk around and its about 2 miles from Lower Broadway and 2nd Avenue where most tourists gravitate. The honky tonks are there as well as the Wildhorse Saloon, the State Capitol is close by and the Bicentennial Mall and Farmers Market. Heading West up West End will take you to several historic homes such as Belle Meade Plantation and Cheekwood. There is tons to do in Nashville- have a great trip! OH- the Mexican restaurant next door to Exit/In is super good!!!
