About 12% of babies are born prior to 37 weeks in the US, and it can be for a variety of reasons. It can be because the mother develops pre-eclampsia and so an induction or C-section is done. It can be because something is wrong with the baby so an induction or C-section is done. It can be for no known reason and the mom's water breaks or contractions start and can't be stopped.

Yep, as Melissa says, it's roughly 10% of babies and half of them, there is no known cause as to why they were premature. I found this blog that discusses the states of causes of premature babies. I hope this is helpful. I noted that the increasing ages of first time mothers may also be a factor in the increase of premature singletons.

The baby will be absolutely fine! When I was born I was 6 weeks premature, now I'm 25 years old. I'm only 5 feet tall. No health, psychical, mental or psychological issues. I'm a normal person just short.

hi, my son was born 5 weeks in advance... I was in the first stages of labor at 27 weeks with contractions 5 minutes apart but with medicine, we were able to hold a few more weeks. They gave me steroids so that my baby lungs would grow faster if he was premature...
They provoqued labor at 35 weeks, it took 2 hours and he was in perfect health...
after 34 weeks, chances are really small that your baby could have something realated with premature birth...

good luck!

At 4 months my daughter weighed 14lb 11oz. She replaced into 8lbs at delivery although. And 6lbs at delivery? i replaced into 6lb 2oz at delivery and that i replaced into 4 days previous due. Your neice might've been one vast toddler if she'd been complete term!

POSSIBLE BUT NOT LIKELY why do you ask? are you unsure of the baby's paternity?if you are pregnant do not do anything to make the baby come early,it is dangerous and it will not work.the truth always comes out! so if that is the case tell the truth and get DNA test done nobody deserves to get stuck supporting a kid that is really not theirs, nobody should live a lie!
