Sounds like that same scam that I get 20 emails a day for. Which one is it? the European Lottery, the British Lottery, Medford K. Buhaha, Esq telling you that E. Mable Nugget died and left you money, the BMW, Microsoft or Yahoo email contest? Each and every one of these are scams. If they were real, I'd have won enough in the last 3 months to pay off the national debt of every country in the world.

By the way, for those who've suddenly seen an increase in these scams coming to their in-box, my increase coincided with my resume being snarfed from the monster.com or USAJOB.gov website.

Who was the check from? If it was from someone you are familiar with, that is different - but still check with your financial institution (or lawyer if you wish) to make sure it is legitimate. If not, it is probably a scam, read the fineprint first. I had a friend deposit a large check supposedly for winning a lottery and he almost got arrested for fraud. Check it out real good before cashing it.

I recently saw a report on a scam that sounded very similar to this. It was being run out of Nigeria. I don't remember details of the scam, but you need to be very cautious. And whatever you do, do not give them any personal information, especially financial, until you are sure this is legit.

I win a significant amount of money EVERY day! From UK, Nigeria, Liberia, Italy, European Lottery, etc. It is all fraud attempts. You never have to give a deposit on something you win if it is legitimate. It's a scam to get you to part with your money, and you'll never see it again. Don't fall for it. Don't do it. It's phishing, it's scamming, it's scheming.

Don't deposit that thing yet and do take it to a lawyer and have them check it out. What was the way you were supposedly won it. Read all the fine print.

Talk to your bank mgr. If you deposit it I would open a seperate account with minimum funds and see what happens. If it clears take the money out and re-deposit in your reg. account and don't touch it for 2 wks.

Did you enter a contest? If you win a contest you did not enter it should be a red flag.
