Good question. Thank you...finally someone thinking aesthetics.
It's really a personal choice however, and how the eye and brain fool each other.
If the wall opening/passage way is most used, as opposed to doorways/arches off that main area, then it would seem to make the room appear longer/larger to install perpendicular to that opening. Agian, it's still a personal choice, and may involve also the general layout/design of the room.
The perpendicular install would be even moire effective if windows or a focal point is opposite that large passage way.
Certainly you could add intrigue or a different design sense by installing parrallel.
My suggestion...Lay them out beforE ANY install and live with your choice for a short while, checking the design from all angles.

Certainly a lot of this will depend on the graining or LOOK of the laminate chosen. if it's heavily grained it will have a different look in the aesthetics than a tight/ smooth grain.

I would go horizontal just because I wouln't want ending up with less than full boards in the opening. Narrow strips would look tacky and there is a possibility you would have to make length wise cuts to fit the opening.

Hi actually...it's not up to your wall opening it's up to which way your joists are running...if you have a basement you should see which direction your joists are going and you lay your floor in the opposite direction of your joists...if your on a slab it doesent matter you then tend to run the floor in the direction of the way the sun comes through your window...does that make sense?...therefore you don't see the seams in the floor, i don;t know how else to explain it...any other questions feel free to e mail me at fastjeepchick@yahoo.com...good luck

If you want the room to look large run it parallel to the opening
...smaller would be perpendicular.

horizontal, otherwise it won't look right. But you should suit your own taste.
