Those we consider to be in misery may not believe so since they judge their environment based on their own experience. I think then that misery is not the norm as most humans are resilient and find joy and beauty in experiences within their lives. It is the comparison of their experiences with others that seems to cause misery, not the experiences themselves.

One's misery may be another's happiness. Technically speaking, misery, in this sense, would be the norm (along with the elation of those who "profit" from such misery). However, it is mostly subjective. It depends on one's overall outlook on life. For hopeless pessimists, misery is abundant; for the naive optimists, all is just great. Where exactly one falls in between these two extremes is determined by one's own judgement.

Sometimes it is the misery that gets us out of the norm & into the exception. We are usually only motivated to learn thru pain, sad but true. When we are warm & comfey with all our wants met, we are not motivatrd to change.

Misery seems to be the salient thing in this country, but it doesn't have to be that way.

Not even close. If you are feeling miserable, think about something else.
