I just got back from the Pearl Harbor memorial on Oahu, which has once again sparked my interest in the ship my great grandfather was killed on. I believe it was an ammunition ship that was located in the Guadalcanal. I have searched the internet, and have not found much! Any ideas?

It was the USS Serpens (AK-47), a Navy cargo ship, but manned by Coast Guard personnel. She exploded at Lunga Beach,Guadalcanal on Jan. 29, 1945. Only two crew members survived. The link below will give you more information.
