Guppies are just like any other tropical and should be in a filtered heated tank. You will always find cases where it works out for fish if you didn't give them that. I'm not saying like this is the law, but you really should have that heater. Clearly, humans persevered in less then ideal conditions over time and evolved. You've already had the guppies in a bowl all this time and that kind of proves they can adapt, but it's not ideal to have them in a non heated tank.

The easy way to heat a fish tank is an Aquarium heater. Otherwise, keep the whole room above 68F(20C) and guppies should be OK. They do best up around 77F(25C) though. Bodgy setups with lamps don't work well as the fish cook during the day, and freeze at night when the light is off. A proper aquarium heater switches on and off as needed. It may not run at all on a hot day, but on a cold night it will run as needed to keep the water warm. Ian

Guppies are tropical fish, so the temp should remain in the 74-80F range. However, what is even more important than that is that the temperature remains constant. If the temp swings from 80 to 74 and back every day, that is very stressful on your fish. They will also not be very happy if you keep them at a cool temperature, whether or not it is constant. I have heaters even for my goldfish, for while they do not require a tropical temperature, they do require a constant temperature. The best thing for your fish is to get a heater.

no they dont need a heater. do get a termometer made especially for a fish tank (the one at wal-mart is nice its like $2) its suctions to the tank wall and has a gauge area that is good for tropical fish. just make sure the temperature in the tank is between 75 -80 degrees. if it drops too low or gets too hot quickly that can cause stress to the fish, and thats why you need a heater for a constant temperature.
if your room is normally between those temperatures, there is no reason to spend $20 on a heater that you will barely use
I did this to my 45gal tank, it stays at 78 constantly and the heater has been off. if you need heat, keep your over head light on. it heats the water too a little bit.
good luck!

I would go a little higher than the temperature mentioned above, more around 65-68o as the lowest for them to be comfortable, but as long as the room stays above that, they shouldn't need a heater. They will do better with one, so the temperature would be in the low-mid 70s, though.
If you are only keeping guppies, they'll also do better with a little salt added to their water (about 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons of tank volume). It's best to use salt without iodine or anticaking ingredients. Pet stores sell aquarium salt, but canning, pickling, kosher, rock, and table salt without iodine added are the same thing, and usually lots cheaper.

If they are at room temperature, they will be fine. I've kept guppies for years in a tank with no heater.

Guppies are cold water fishes, you don't need heaters for them. But please do not let the water drop down beyond their natural habitat's temperature. 20 - 25 degree Celsius is fine with them.
