In an interview President Bush was asked what he would do after his term is over, and among other things he said, "I'd like to make some money....replenish the ol' coffers. I can make ridiculous money on the lecture circuit. I don't know what my dad gets, but it's more than fifty, seventy five thousand....Clinton's making a LOT of money. Six years from now you're not gonna see hanging out in the lobby of the UN".

There's no doubt Bush is free to do whatever he wants when his term is up. But whether you love him or hate him, how can anyone think it's anything but inappropriate for a President to be talking about lining his own pockets with cash as he sends troops into war?

Actually I saw it on TV in an interview with Robert Draper. He is the author of the book, "Dead Certain - The Presidency of Geroge W. Bush" and he said it was a quote that is part of the book.

Ahhhh, found a link that has it in print:

And for those of you with reading comprehension problems, I never said there was anything wrong with lecturing after his term was up, as many other former Presidents have done.

However, the question was whether it is inapropriate to talk about his plans to "replenish the ol' coffers" while he's Commander and Chief of the armed forces.

Mr. President....you need a life (though it might pertain to both, I mean the poster below).

Wow, can't believe how many Bush apologists can't understand a simple question.

Christ once said "The love of money is the root of all evil". And it looks like George Bush is returning to his roots.

Meanwhile many of our soldiers are living on welfare, while Bush is looking to line his pockets with more loot. He is already worth more than 20 million dollars, how much wealth does he need? Why can't our troops get decent health care when they come back from Iraq? Why do our soldiers make so little money?

George Bush disgusts me, he doesn't care about anyone but himself.

As much as I dislike the guy, I can't fault him for this one. He didn't say it in a press conference or on a visit with the troops or anything. He said it in the context of a series of fairly relaxed interviews with a guy writing a book about him. I'd be a little surprised if the subject didn't come up, and his comments were relatively tame.

How does sending troops to War, have anything to do with him lining his pockets?

Your right he is free to do what he wants, and I do think it may be inappropriate for a sitting president to discuss his future money making plans, maybe not.

But I don't see any connection with him sending troops into a war. If the war is justified, it is, if it isn't it isn't, it all depends on your point of view, but it has no correlation with how he is going to make money when he is no longer president.

Being president doesn't pay well. Plus, its a shitty, stressful job. If anything, its about the power.

Don't forget the guy is a Connecticut-born, ivy league educated millionaire. Don't get fooled by all that Texas ranch hand garbage.

He would be an excellent speaker for Just Say No type speeches to school kids.
And why grammar is in fact important.

One has NOTHING to do with the other. If it's OK for slick willy to be out there lining his pockets, it's OK for any other President to do so......
