Somebody in my class said he got signed off so he can drive alone to school and to work with his learners permit. How do you do that?

depend on what state you are in. they're all different.

The whole point of a learner's permit is so that you can LEARN how to drive. It is NOT a license. In the United States you cannot drive alone with a permit. I don't know how it is in other states, but in California you need a licensed driver over 25 years old in the car with you at all times until you get your license.

Some states will allow you to ride a motor-scooter or the like, but not drive a car.
