Sounds like the Heaven's Gate cult.
They committed suicide in order to free themselves from their bodies, so their souls (or whatever) could enter a spaceship that was hiding in the tail of comet Hale-Bopp.
They all wore the same athletic shoes, and covered themselves with the same undersized purple cloth as they drank their poison.
