I don't have any specific characteristics for you. Preferably people who don't pick their noses or bums and all that kinda stuff. As long as they can maintain a certain level of respect for self and others, and are socially adept and polite, I'm cool with them. :D

I tend to associate with people who have direction in their lives. By that I mean, they know what they want, they know what career they want, and they go out and get it. They are not indecisive (one of my biggest pet peeves), and they take charge of situations. They do not show a lot of weaknesses, but among close friends, they will break that wall down, after all, they are human.
I admire vigilance and resilience in people.

I know a 42 year old woman who survived Hodgkin's Disease as a child. She came from a poor family, and had mentally unstable parents. She was abused and neglected. As a teen, she developed a severe addiction to alcohol. As an adult, she fought to overcome her addiction, successfully, but as a result of her many years of alcohol abuse she developed permanent mental disabilities because of it. She also survived a serious bout of breast cancer, and had two brain surgeries to remove tumors from her brain. I met her in one of my college classes this last year, and got to know her pretty well. I'm amazed that throughout all she's been through, she gets up every day, gets on a bus (she's poor, and has no car, no family) and comes to school, taking classes (despite her learning disability) to become a drug/alcohol counselor. She arrives every day, with a positive attitude, and a smile for everyone, even though there are students who have teased her and put her down for the mental disability that she has. She's not a quick learner. She has to read everything several times before she understands it well enough to express what she has learned. She struggles with her schoolwork, and she still keeps going. She just finished her first year toward her degree. Over the summer, she found out that her Hodgkin's disease has come back (after 32 years in remission), and that she has thyroid cancer, as well. She started chemo treatments (for the third time in her life) this summer...all the while, taking summer classes and continuing with her course work...never a hint of giving up on her goals. This woman may not live long enough to get her degree, yet she isn't letting that knowledge stop her from striving toward her dream. She wants to be around long enough to help others who struggle with alcoholism...to overcome their addiction. Her motives are pure, and giving. She inspires me greatly. I have tears in my eyes as I write this. This person is someone I am proud to know, blessed to associate with. She inspires me to keep going toward my goals and dreams, and reminds me (through her living example) that no mountain is too high to climb.

I like to associate with people who are wise and understanding, people I admire are people who are willing to admit they are wrong and are willing to accept whatever life has to offer to them, good or bad.
