I pay over 1,200 dollars a month for a two bedroom apartment in Oakbrook Terrace Il, when I first moved in it was the perfect place to live. Now there are fights in the club house, gang signs drawn on the doors, and a lot of less than desirable tenants. The rumor running ramped through the complex is that they have started to allow Section 8 to live here. I pay way too much money a month for this place to turn into a project. When I asked the office if this were true they said no, I also asked if it were true would they tell me and they said they would not have to inform the other tenants. Is there anything I can do? How can I even find out if there is Section 8 in my apartment complex? It is not like I can ask them "so how is life on welfare treating you" HELP! I want them out, let them go and live in the ghetto!! It is not fair that I have to pay over 1,200 dollars a month and they get to live here for damn near free!!!!

Go to the local Section 8 office. They usually have a board up that tells you all the places that take Section 8. Apply for Section 8 if you see your apartment complex is on the list. When it comes time to renew your lease tell them you found them at the Section 8 office and then get in with them. I think getting on Section 8 has it's good and bads. The good being that you pay way less in rent every month. The bad is your going to probably live in a place that isn't very nice and the thing I hate the most is that you never know when you are going to hit the top of the list so you may not even be able to move cause you have to move when they want you to.

It falls under the category of "Life is not Fair" Yes it sucks if they are bringing in section 8 into the complex, however, there is nothing you can do to stop it unless it's a condo association and you own. The Management company is under no obligation to reveal who in the complex is under Section 8, however, you could have a friend call the manager and ask if they accept section 8 in their complex, that wil answer your question. If you were in a condominium complex and owned, condos can regulate whether or not they allow an owner to rent to section 8 people and how many are allowed to rent. An apartment complex is not regulated by the renters only the owner of the building, and if the owner wants to accept in section 8 then that's the property owners choice.
If you can find out what the management company's corporate office is write to them (the ones on site answer to a property manager and Regional VP in a corporate office) send letters along with photographs, express your concern for your safety, the damage being done to the apartment complex which you will ultimately end up paying for when they up the rents due to the increased common area expense due to vandalism. If you know who's doing the damage report them to the management office so they can notify the renter and deal with them accordingly. In my experience working for an apartment managment company there is little to nothing they are going to do, they will not evict all the section 8 renters for one complaining tenant. You'd be better off renting a private townhome or condo from a private LL or buying your own home where you don't have to deal with the whims of a management company.
It shouldn't be fair that you pay that much money to live in a neighborhood that is no longer a safe place.
If that doesn't work then give notice to the mgmt company 30 days prior to expiration that you are moving out. It's your only recourse.

Rest assure your problem is not section8 the problem are the quality of people that your apartment complex is renting to. I happen to have section8 and although it may make you feel better to class me as worthless I am not. My husband had an awesome Job. His hand was grinded in a machine while working. I went back to college and just recently graduated with a Bachelors in criminal justice managment with a 4.0 gpa. We are black and we are intelligent and are children are as well. While going to school I supported my family I worked as a full time Sub-teacher. My home is pristine and we are well dressed. I wear designer purses and clothes. Smiling before you get off of that as well "They dress better than I do" sure do because I have smarts. I second hand shop and buy the elites purses at a fraction of the cost and clothes as well.... So you see many Americans are like you... You love to put everyone in the same box.. I just recently moved with my degree two weeks ago and I am looking for housing with my section8. Will I have it long? hope not as I mention this section8 person has a degree and I'm looking for employment. What did I do different? I used it to get ahead not stay in... So next time you go ranting about section8 don't group everyone together. Oh did I say also that I do plays have directed as well and made the orgainzation 9,500 which computes to= 4 days eight hours if your are from the theatre world you get it :) Have an awesome day hunnie Ms. Section8

Contact your local housing authority and ask if your complex has Section 8 units. Unless there is something in your lease that states the landlord will not allow subsidized tenants, there is nothing you can do but move to some place where paying full price brings full value.

Wow! If the place is that bad, find somewhere else. If your paying such premium monthly rent, surely you can find some place better for that price.
Qualifying for section 8 wold be considered personal financial information. So you are not going to find out if and who in the complex are on section 8.

What difference does it make whether there is section 8 housing there or not. The point is the place has gone downhill since you moved in. I'd give notice and move out.
However, if it's really important for you to know, call the office posing as someone who qualified for section 8 and ask them if they take it.

there is nothing you can do. its equal housing they have to take section 8 . i work for a apt complex where if you are not on a lease you dont belong and even if youre section 8 if the cops are called on you at youre place youre out and you lose section 8 the best thing to do is call the police when you see stuff happening. you dont have to give youre name. once section 8 move in its all down hill from there. there is nothing you can do but buy youre own home.

I have a friend who live out there and everytime I visit (day and night) I see just regulary people doing regular things. Maybe you should move to Cityview @ the Highlands....Nice complex but you will have the same problem everywhere you go unless you buy your own house and move it to the middle of the cornfield.

You can move out at the end of your lease or pay the penalty to move out now. You cannot tell the owners who and who not to rent to. You can organize a group of paying customers to tell the landlord that you will all be leaving if they do not fix the problem.
