We are replacing windows - our township is of no help as to what is required. My understanding is we need 5.7 sq ft for egress but I also read ground floor windows require only 5 sq ft. Also, how low does the sill have to be from the floor?

Without knowing what you mean by no help; Some Govt. agency in your area has to have an office that regulates, governs, and monitors codes/permits and zoning.

If your immediate township can't help; go to the county.

Without anyone here knowing where you live; it would be unlikely we could offer much more. Obviously anyone with that knowledge, living in your town, who happens to see this would be able. Sadly, or unfortunately, Codes are not strictly standard, Nationally.

Contact your local window retailer, they should know. Size of sash depends on type of window. Usually egress windows are only required in bedrooms without an exterior door. Around here(SoCal) windows have to be tempered if the sill is below 18" from the floor.
