Wow, 8 bars is only about 30 seconds (Most auditions are 16 bars, some are 32). You don't choose a song that's 8 bars, you just sing a portion of the song that's about that long, usually the best part that you can sing well and that's generally the last part or the end of the song. For instance if you sang happy birthday, you'd sing the very last "Happy birthday to you" where you drag out the words.

Usually I'd give you a list of songs to choose from but you don't seem to know a lot about musical theatre so I'm not sure that would help you much. If you know what character you'd like to audition for, usually you'd sing a song that represents that character. If you want to be a step sister you'd sing something funny or character like to show that you can be like that. So if you chose to sing happy birthday, sing it like a step sister would. Horribly and with lots of character.

Have you seen the Rodger's & Hammerstein's version of Cinderella with Brandi & Whitney Houston? It aired on television a few years ago. This is somewhat close to what you'll likely be doing and may give you a good idea of what to expect. The stepsisters sing a song called "Stepsister's Lament" that's pretty funny and you may be able to download it to hear it. http://www.uppersandusky.k12.oh.us/usms/cinder/lament.html

You may even find a performance on youtube.

pick your favourite song...or atleast one you THINK you know really well...
if not sing the national anthem
or happy birthday!
just try to be comfortable and confident...if you arent the best singer and if you really didnt prepare that much you may not get a lead part but hopefully youll still get in!
good luck

'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' is a favorite of choir and drama directors worldwide. Also good is anything from 'The Fantastics'.
