Hi. Eventually they reach an altitude where the internal pressure is so much greater then the external pressure that they either burst or the gaps in the material allow the helium to escape and they float down.

way way way away...either end up coming back down to earth or popping along the way because of the difference between the inside pressure of the air in the balloon and the atmospheric pressure as the balloon rises. Sometimes people send messages on balloons to see where they go and far they travel.
