If you are talking about out current system - 2007 AD - that was invented in about 500 or 600 by a monk who then tried calculating backwards to see when year zero would have been.
But at the time they were using a different system.

No there was no year zero, they did not even work out when it was until about 30 AD then worked back

today's calender is a judeo-christian one and back in the day they used a solar calender in Rome that is the basis for the today's Judeo-Christian calender\Today's calender is zeroed in on the supposed time of the death of Jesus. Thus you would have to do research on Roman calenders and those of other cultures to ascertain what would have been called year zero by a christian going back in time

There was never a year zero.
The years counted backwards for B.C., then forward for A.D. So, 1 A.D. was the very next year after 1 B.C.
