is it true that grades only b and above are counted in grad school, and everything else is basically failing? any experiences/ online information about this? thanks.

Yes and No. A C is officially a passing grade -- but is often only given to students who do not do decent work.

All grades count. Many schools have a minimum GPA required for getting a graduate degree. Some may have a requirement that you get at least a B in certain core classes. This is not universal.

At many schools, grades below a B are somewhat rare in graduate classes.

Yep, pretty much. You can get a C or below, but most schools will make you retake the course for a B or better. Even if they don't, you have to maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher in order to remain enrolled.
