If you are in the U.S., as I suspect, it is because most of us live in one of a series of democratic Republics, called States or Commonwealths. Under this form of government, we elect people to handle the details for us. Those who were elected have decided, and I believe rightly so, that running red lights is a dangerous thing to do, whether or not there is a police officer present. They have also decided that dangerous things, as this is, should be made violations punishable by law. They further decided that the use of video monitoring equipment is an effective method of deterring this type of violation by identifying and punishing those who ignore the law, thereby reducing the danger to other vehicles and people using the roads.
As a guess, you got caught.

you can vote for representatives which could easily make it illegal. so you do have a voice. but those responsible for public safety and law enforcement - it's a no-brainer.
