If my father died and the ex-wife had joint custody but abandoned the girls a couple years ago and left them with my dad but now came back around cause she found out and that she could get money through my dads social security if she takes the girls. Am I allowed to petition even though she has legal joint custody?

yes, but I recommend doing it with a good attorney. gold-diggers like her are dangerous and a good lawyer can stop her.

How old are you? IF Legally emancipated in your state, and have a reasonable income (enough to provide for the siblings), OR you can show the stepmother is unfit, you will ave a good chance. If your siblings are over 12 or so their opinion might help when you face a judge.

Sure, anyone can petition. Heck, I could petition to take them. My petition would be rejected by the court with out merit. Yours may or may not based on the laws in your state and how they apply to your specific circumstances.

I will tell you this, you won't get custody without a lawyer.

Im not sure that you can, chances are though that if she only has the girls to get money you might have a case if you can prove that she is an unfit mother. Other than that Im not really sure...
