i watched them on perry mason and ironside and they never had a real thing for each other that the viewers saw. but they did care for each other deeply.

I think it was up to the viewer to decide. It was the same with Matt Dillon and Miss Kitty. Did they or didn`t they?

I never got the impression there was anything between them other than deep respect and mutual admiration.
