What purpose does the ACLU really serve? - Their stated purpose is: "We must preserve the protections and the checks and balances in the Constitution against government abuses of power that violate our fundamental values."
Private organizations do not need a vote to form, or as you put it "into power". Maybe you should spend some time on their site before you jump to a conclusion about the organization.

I totally disagree with the ACLU on most things. They should leave Christmas alone. But on the other hand, we Christians asked for it back years ago when we tried to force our agenda's on everyone else. Not caring about other people's right to believe or not to believe. I got told in the third grade by my Pentecostal teacher that I was going to hell because my family was Catholic. Laws the ACLU helped to get passed put an end to crap like that. But they need to leave Christmas alone. It's become more commercial than Christian anyway.

The ACLU is a private advocacy group to protect Civil Rights. They only take on cases that are brought to them. It is the courts that actually decides the cases. In the past the ACLU taken and won cases for the Republican Party, Rush Limbaugh, and Oliver North.

The ACLU is a group, of mostly lawyers, who defend constitutional rights. They acquired their power like most groups, by having enough people to have a recognizable voice in matters.
They only tackle constitutional issues, no matter who the client or the cause, which is what gives them a black eye from time to time. The truth is, if one persons rights are not recognized, then none of our rights are.

The ACLU, the bogeyman of all conservatives hiding under their bedsheets, is just a group of lawyers who try to represent minority interests in America.
They are not in power of any kind, but speak for minorities and a large voting block on many issues, so politicians listen to what they say SOMETIMES.
They are themselves limited by the legal process, and any claims or lawsuits that they brought which were not legitimate would be rejected by the legal system.
Not everybody in the world agrees with YOU! Just because different people have opinions different than you does not make them ANY LESS PATRIOTIC!!!
Get USED TO IT!!!

It's just like any other private organization. There's no "voting" involved- membership is voluntary.
The purpose they serve is to make sure your rights as an American, as guaranteed by the Constitution, are preserved.
Pretty cool, huh?

at the beginning of any group or any organization, everything
is good, clean, respectful,honorable,and dissent.
but after while when profits, greed, and power starts to roll down or up, then that organization losses its dignity and respect.
just like so many other organizations who lost their ways.

They protect civil rights. Although some of their cases are disgusting, they have done some very good things and do help to protect our rights.

I for one have never seen any thing good come out of the ACLU. They had the 10 commandments taken out of our court house and now they are fighting for the rights of the people we are at war with. Putting our American soldiers on trial. I wish the ACLU would craw back under the rock they came from.
