The person who last answered is actually incorrect. It is the River Styx, The River Styx is the first river you cross. you have to pay Charon two coins to ferry you across. The River Acheron was only one of the nine rivers to be cross in the journey. And that is also why when you died two coins were laid over your eyes, that and to help keep them closed of course but the River Styx is the first river you cross

The river Styx flowed nine times around Hades and souls destined for hades had to be ferried across by Cheron. The river was named for the Daughter of Oceanus and Tethys. There were 4 more rivers in Hades that I would assume would be crossed on occasion, the Acheron,Cocytus, Lethe, and Phlegethon.

The river Styx by taking a boat steered by Charon. You had to pay him two coins for passage so thats why people were buried with two coins on their eyes ( and to keep the lids closed during the funeral). If you tried to stiff Charon and swim across you would forget everything about your life and become lost forever.

The River Styx. You had to pay a toll after death for Charon to ferry you across.

As stated many times already, it was Charon who was the boat keeper. For 2 coins (normally placed over the eyes of the deceased) he would ferry you across the river Styx.
I believe i am right in remembering, if you did not have the coins, you did not have the means to pass the river, as to step into its waters would drive your soul mad, so you were left to wander the world as a spirit.

All of the above answers are wrong.
The River which the dead crossed was the ACHERON, ferried across by Charon.
The Styx was another underworld river which the gods used for swearing oaths. The dead didn't cross it.
