The trail LED/LEADS/WILL LEAD us to an old well near a deserted stable. When referring to a noun doing something, you don't use a verb in plain form. You either make it a different tense or change the form

I like Ruth better than HER.
She is used to refer someone doing something (She likes, she does) not when referring to someone else.

The expedition WAS looking for gold.
When talking about a single object/group, you use WAS. When talking plural, use WERE.

first sentence. Add a "s" behind the word lead

second sentence: better than her.

third sentence: Use "was" insteading of "were"

leadS - third person singular

better than her - object

The expedition was - third person singular
