Everytime I turn on my computer
[hp pavilion notebook, dv2000 series, W.Vista]
it gives me a black screen that reads

"Checking File C.".;.. something something

and as it goes through, it says " Stage 1 of 3"

then it tells me my percent, it goes from 1-8 percent fairly quick. but it freezes at 8 percent. and stays for a long time... i've let it sit for a while and it didnt change at all.

Turn your computer on just before you go to bed, work, school and leave it run.

It is performing a hard drive check.

You may have powered it off impropperly or it has detected damaged/corrupt files.

This can take hours if there is a major problem.

If it does not complete when you get up/back; call HP support.

They are quite good in getting you up and running.

Good Luck.

It means that the drive is being checked for errors. Sometime it takes a while. Be patient. You may have to try safe mode [if it goes for several hours], or try a fresh install. It is possible that the drive is bad.
