In DI A... no. A win over a #5 ranked Michigan is fantastic, but lets be honest, Michigan was not on their A game. If ASU would have won by 20 or some huge number like that, I would think they should be ranked in DI A, but since it was such a close game I say no. Not to discredit ASU for their effort, but I think about 40+ DI A teams could have beat Michigan with their poor play.
In an overall ranking of DI A teams, I would put ASU somewhere around 50, but not worthy of even a top 30.

People keep showing their ignorance on this issue. Teams are 1-A , 1-AA, 1-AAA based on school enrollment, stadium capacity, scholorships available and variaty of sports at the school in question. Not the quality of the football team. Many 1-AA schools have football teams that could compete with most any 1-A team . Especially in the starting lineup. Because they don't have as many scholarships to offer or the size of student body to draw on, they usually fall short in depth.
1-AA plays GOOD ball. They have their own ranking. It just doesn't make news unless you know what to look for.
We expect more of 1-A teams because they usually have more potential on the bench, and higher recruiting power. (Often ruffians that can't make the grade scholastically, and only have foot ball skills to offer, many shouldn't be in college in the first place)
1-AA schools often have a higher percentage of scholar-athletes. Don't sell short their abilities and drive. Plus they "play" smart.
Everyone being so surprised by this "upset" is just showing how little they know about "real" college football.
I have seen a few very intelligent answers here about 1-AA sports. Thumbs up to those who understand divisions.

They aren't ranked in the Division 1AA rankings? That is an outrage. Man I wish people would learn how it works. This is the reason for the stupid new names. So people will get that Division 1A and Division 1AA aren't the same thing. Yet people only see that Division 1 part.

In the hypothetical situation that Appy State was in the Bowl Sub-Division, they WOULD be ranked... about 20 or so. Then they would continue on with a Bowl Sub-Division schedule, lose four or five games, and fall out.

No, they aren't good enough. They beat a Michigan that was not playing even half of what they should have been playing at. Yes they are better than people thinks they are but they are top 60 or 70 at best.

They're not in the same division as Bowl teams, they're in the Championship subdivision, they're not eligible to be ranked in the Bowl Division polls.

Appalchian State isn't ranked, but neither is Michigan HAHAHA. They could be another Boise State. Appalachian State can go undefeated, because if they can beat Michigan they can surely beat the other 1-AA teams on their schedule.
