My car has been stalling lately & I suspect bad gas. Is it safe to pour rubbing alcohol in your gas tank to evaporate the water?

Isopropyl Alcohol As Fuel

Rubbing alcohol is mostly water and will just make the problem worse since the strength of the alcohol is so low. For a few dollars you can buy a methanol fuel additive which will disburse the water in your fuel system.

Drop the tank and put new gas in it, not too hard two bolts holding the straps and gas lines on top of the tank. Replace the battery or just re chard it. You might have to crank on it to get all the water out of the gas lines then when it starts drive it. Also check your oil and make sure it is clean.

Isopropyl alchohol products from parts stores or rubbing alchohol is chemically missing a water molecule and good for absorbing moisture in your gas---much better than methyl or wood alchohol products like Heat---Heat just sounds better to people....figure 8 oz per 20 gallons for small moisture problems. The alchohol will absorb any moisture in the fuel and then run through the system to be burned.

Find a gas station near you that has gasohol, it's usually 5-10% ethanol. Put in 3-5 gals. & the ethanol should be enough to absorb the water in the system. Used this method on my friend's Dad's car after his next door neighbor's kids "played gas station " on his car with a garden hose, he had 3/4 tank of water! I siphoned out most of it & then put in 5 gals. of gasohol. Ran a bit rough at first , but eventually straightened out. Good luck.

I have done it before and nothing went wrong.

If you are in a bind and that is all you have at the moment, it won't make it any worse, just make sure it is 90% alcohol or better.

Then as soon as you get a chance get some isopropyl gas-line anti-freeze from the auto parts store.

that will only work if your problem is a small amount of water. bad gas would require draining and cleaning the tank, replacing the filter(s), flushing the lines and refilling with good fuel.

Nope not a good idea, if you believe it's bad gas, use a fuel additive and re-fill your tank once you put it in

There are products out there one is gasdry, formulated for just this purpose. Don't use rubbing alcohol. It could damage your fuel system or worse, your engine.
