I mean, especially profiles with 200 +++ contacts. Do they really know these so called 'friends'?
Do you think it's a game of popularity for some?

I joined facebook 4 weeks ago to keep in contact with friends I met at a residential school in Spain. I agree that a lot of the time it is about making up numbers. However, I did a residential school with The Open University which involved 130 people the week I was studying there. It is quite feasable that of the 130 people that were there, I have 65 to 70 different contacts.I understand the problems people have with facebook, it can be very difficult to navigate but it is a great way of maintaining regular contact with genuine friends. As all my friends and fellow students live in different parts of the world, it is an ideal way of keeping in touch.

Obviously these types of "social networking" sites are highly popular or hundreds of thousands of users would not have profiles on them.

Different people get differnet needs met by participating on these types of sites. For some it is about feeling "popular" for others it is a way to share family vacations, photos, lives, for others it is a way to meet knew people, and others again for just posting a journal, or posting photos of their cats, dogs, quilting, etc.

Facebook seems to be more of a workers network while MySpace is geared more towards the younger crowds, and others, well you get my drift.

These sites are not just one thing, but dozens if not hundreds of things for different people.

No, I don't believe that anyone can actually truly be "freinds" with hundreds of people. However, if you meet just one great person out of hundreds and that person becomes a freind for life, then it would have been well worth the effort. In my humble opinion anyway. No, I don't personally use any of these networking sites, but I do have a blog I use as a journal.

We each have our own needs and expectations for use of the Internet. It is wrong for use to critize others we don't even know for using it the way they prefer, simply because it is not how we would choose to use it. I for one try not to judge over much, but as I am as human as the next it is an ongoing stuggle to avoid judgments. lol With that said, yeah, I do think it rather silly to try and tell people you have hundreds of friends! I hope people can use these sites for the tools they really can be and stay safe while doing so.

I joined facebook a few weeks ago, and initially I hated it!!! But it is a great way to reconnect with all those people you've lost contact with over the years. I have around 120 and I know all of these people, Myspace is the popularity contest! I know people who compete over profile views! There are some people who are on both and don't get the concept of facebook and just add people for the sake of it, but I generally feel that Facebook is great, addictive, I love it!!! hardly use my myspace as much, but its a shame that you can't personalise your page as you can with Facebook. Ah well....

I use it to keep in touch with family. I know there's a ton of stuff that you can do (games and diving into your past) but the only thing I've tried so far is the World Quiz. I'm absolutely hopeless!!!! It's quite depressing really!!!! LOL!

I like facebook. every time I go on Myspace I get serious problems with my computer, so I leave well alone.
Face book is cool as I use it like a diary, I've got about 10 friends there but they are all real friends.

i don't care, really, look its not possible in real life to have over 200+++ "friends". it plain BS.

yes its game of cheap popularity. ask teens if they can concentrate at least more than 5-10 minutes on homework or reading a books, without whining "oh...my parents or my school has blocked myspace, i want it back, please"

yes they do have virtual friends, but how many of them have real life, friends that will stand together in bad and good times. that's question.

LMAO facebook is complicated ....boy you kids want EVERYTHING EASY...
