Can bad fuel cause a newer vehicle (2002) to show a check engine code for the Evap system? The reason I ask is after my husband and I both filled up our vehicles, we both got check engine lights (this is within 12 hours). Mine is just showing "engine knocking" and "fuel tank temp" errors, but my husband's is showing those two and also a P0445 and P1448 errors. Our mechanic is telling us that we have to replace the entire Evap system (over $600), but told us it isn't leaking, just full. Can't those things be cleaned out? This seems like too much of a coincidence for us to fill up at the same gas station within hours of each other and then for both vehicles to have the "check engine soon" light come on. Any ideas?

They are 2002 Nissans. One is a Frontier and one is a Xterra. Both the trucks are throwing P0183 and P0382. The Frontier is also throwing the other two codes I mentioned earlier.

On some cars, if you overfill the tank, it can run into the vapor recovery hose of the fill neck hose and cause problems with the evap system which is suppose to operate on fuel vapors. This can set off the check engine light and cause error codes. You may have to have the lines blown out and maybe the charcoal cannister replaced or aired out to fix the system. You should never "top off" the tank on newer cars for this reason...just stop filling after the pump nozzle clicks off. And also make sure your gas cap is on tight.

One "problem" can cause multiple other problems. As you've found out, the "code" doesn't mean the problem is that piece, it means that piece isn't getting the readings the PCM is expecting. So yes, the MAF could cause these problems, but isn't likely. It's far more likely you've got something related to all of these components going on, and solving that problem would take care of all the rest of them. Need to do actual diagnosis, not code read and replace parts. It gets expensive. That's why so many cars in the wrecking yards have newly replaced electrical components.

If you would give vehicle make it wouldhelp. Also give all codes so we can diagnose the problem. One trouble code can cause another to occur so need to know all codes.
P1448 evap. canister vent control valve open.PO445 purge control valve shorted.
As you can see these are related problems. Stay away from DEALERS and find an honest shop.
