If I free-hand a picture (not copied or photographed), can I be sued for copyright violation? For instance, if I like snoopy or something and draw pictures freehand that look like the charachters so I can sell them, can I be sued?

When I took airbrush classes, the instructor made one thing VERY clear. Don't copy someone elses work. Especially, do not use Disney or Harley Davidson items, including the shape of Harleys logo. I thought he was being overly protective until I happened to pick up a motorcycle book and saw a reward for turning in people selling anything Harley without permission.

Of course. Even if you don't physically copy a copyrighted image, if you distribute a picture that looks too similar to the copyrighted image, you could be sued. Although it's your drawing, someone came up with the idea and image of Snoopy beforehand. This comes in handy when the freehand copy is used to depict something controversial. For instance, if I were to draw Snoopy with a thought bubble saying "Death to America," I'm pretty sure that that would damage the reputation of the artist and his drawing.

Yes you can, it is a trademark even if you draw it by hand. You can even get sued for making paintings from photographs such as you might see in a magazine and selling them. You have to change a few things around to get away with it. You can't draw Snoopy and sell it no matter what. Make up your own character and get richer!

I dont think you can be sued just for drawing it, but you could for selling it. That's why there are copyrights.

Snoopy is off limits. That's copyright infringement. Dream up something of your own. Give it a name and affix the copyright notice.

The snoopy character is copyrighted. Drawing it is illegal and you can be sued.

Just drawing it and you should be fine.

Try to sell it though and you can be sued.

Not to my knowledge for drawing it. If you use the image for commercial reasons, you may be in some legal trouble.
