Your manual calls for 5W-30 year round. It pumps to critical parts faster, cools the cylinder walls and frictional surfaces more efficiently and believe it or not the oil temperature will be lower. Start-up is where 90% of engine wear occurs. Higher viscosity oil makes the oil pump work harder. The motor actually looses power.
As for "kind" if you are refering to brand names: Valvoline, Havoline, Quaker State and Mobil are all top shelf Texas brands. Gulf and Brad Penn are the only true Pennsylvania oils left. They still come from the old Kendal refinery in Bradford Pa.

If you'd like to see what viscosity oils Joe Gibbs uses in their Nextel Cup cars log on to Joe Gibbs Racing Oil. It specificly lists what they use to brake the motors in on the engine dynomometer, restrictor plate racing, and the oil used when the suffocating restrictor plates are not used. Small hint: No 10W-30, 40 or 50.

*Q: What brand of synthetic/dino oil should I use?

A: Once again, no real best answer here. As for synthetic, GM endorses Mobil 1, so it doesn't hurt to go with that GM uses, however just about any synthetic or dino oil will be fine, as long as its approved to be used in your car.

*Q: What weight oil should I use in my LS1?

A: 5W30 is probably your best bet. If you live anywhere other than places where it constantly gets above 95 degrees F then you'll want to use 5W30. For people who live in hot climates, go ahead and try 10W30, however I would not use 10W40 or higher.

Personally, I use the Castrol Syntec 5W30 in my 02 Camaro Z28 w/ a LS1 V8(Auto) w/ 78K miles on the clock.

Colder climate...I'd use 10w30 spring to fall and 5 w30 in winter.....if you're in the lower half of the US, 10w30 or 10w40 year round. Don't buy into the "high mileage" or synthetic crap either....also, stay away from any Quaker State product...IMO.
