Not every historical movie is bad. As about the arguments, as a historian I know that there are arguments about everything in history. Arguments among historians for the analysis and arguments among nations. The historical movies are as old as the art of cinema and they will never stop, so let's just enjoy a good historical movie.

The Lives of Others. It's takes place during the time before the Berlin Wall fell. Historical setting, but I don't think its based on a true story. It is in German and it won an Oscar for best foreign film. I thought the movie was a bit slow but if you are the artsy type you will probably appreciate its depth. If you are into fantasy and history Pan's Labyrinth is a fabulous movie. Also foreign taking place in facist era Spain.

Apocalipto by Mel Gibson (don't know is that recent for you)

As Leonarda said, unfortunately there is not so much history in "historical" movies that come from Hollywood.
Is that matter of perception or cultural difference, don't know.
I watched "Troy" for example with one American, and he thought that it was a great movie. While I thought it was a rubbish. Brad Pitt as Achilles, I mean c'mon? Achilles was not the type of man that would go to hairdresser for perfect blond hair.
For other reasons I didn't liked 300 so much either.
It helps when you don't know much about the subject.
Like with Apocalipto, so maybe that's why I liked it.

I like the 2004 version of "The Alamo". Although, like any historical movie, there are a couple of things added for drama (but nothing like the cheesey John Wayne version)... The basic idea is there, and the clothing and speech is pretty accurate for the time period (which was before "the wild west").

And if you like hoplites... You'll notice the Alamo story is very close to the Spartan Battle of Thermopylae of 480 B.C.

The New World......its a love a story. The best story I have seen about Pocahontas's relationship with John Smith. It takes place in like in the 1600's. Very romantic, lol its not that old either. Its got the Indians and the Pilgrims fighting there's plenty of action thats the part you will get into but thats not the best parts.

Ah no...thank you...not anymore..Unless it is made by natives..
You remember Troy?
Usually, the history is transformed, and the events and everything is done on the altar of the benefit, and the high number of audience and glamour..
History can not be played according to me in an screen , big or small...
History is history, for every country..The books are enough..At least all the personalities are honoured and not degenerated...
And i repeat...for every country of the world...
