Sounds like you're talking about the Quick & Easy Block Tool from C&T Publishing. Here's a link. Also, here's a tip if you have trouble keeping your regular books open. Have a copy center (Staples, Kinko's, etc.) cut the binding off and replace it with a spiral binding. It costs just a few dollars per book, and it's well worth it.

Sounds like a great way for lots of different block patterns. Regular books tend to close up on you unless you weigh them down. And they take up room on the table -- I have limited table space.
