I had to post an answer because Robins answer is sooooo wrong, it should be erased. For a top contributor her information is way off. A d&c simply dilates the cervix and uses curettes to "clean" out the uterus. There are no incisions as everything is done through the cervix. It is needed when you have extra heavy bleeding, retained products of conception, retained placenta, or retained porducts of pregnancy. A laparoscopy (just so you have correct information) is done to see inside your belly if you will and will not give you a view of the inside of your uterus. It does use co2 and tiny incisions and is possible with the use of a laparscope and cameras. A hysteroscopy is when they use a camera inside the uterus. However, it uses different solutions to "inflate" the uterus as it is very sensitive to pressure. After a d&c it is like having a bad period and you shou8ld recover quickly.

A D&C is a Dialation and Curritage. Which means they dilate the uterus, and use a small tool to scrape the inside to remove the lining. I had it done, The only ouch is that they have to use a little microscope called a laprascope to look inside to make sure they do not cut something that doesn't need to be cut. They will fill your uterus with gas to be able to see better. This can cause a little pain as it is absorbed into your system. The laproscopy will leave a couple of tiny little scars that will heal very well,as long as you take care of them. This procedure is really rather common. You should take it easy for a few days, any surgery is traumatic to our systems, your mom or husband should be with you for a few days. Just to keep you from over doing it with the wee one.
Good luck and don't worry !!!

It stands for Dilation and Curettage. I needed to have one when I had a miscarriage. They basically take out anything remaining in your uterus. They give you a shot first, which made me pass out. It wasn't too bad but has it's risks.
