The Princess Diaries is partly set in New York I believe. They might have seen the film or read it already though...

Freaky Friday was originally a book as well, and that's set in New York City. That one has a film though too. Still, they might get a kick out of hearing the original, I dunno!

"From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" by E. L. Konigsburg is a fabulous read-aloud for that age!

"The Friends" by Rosa Guy. I read it at 13. It was really well written.
