A basic Latin textbook helped me a lot, personally.

Because English is based a lot in ancient Latin, I was able to define words that, beforehand, made no sense...

...Not because I had read them in Latin, but because they were made of parts of - or based upon - Latin root words.

Also, ancient Greek language books are great for prefixes and suffixes.

Those two types of books helped me greatly. Just find ones that suits your learning style. I myself just stick for the basic ones for beginners.

Before improving your vocabulary you need to know what your purpose in expanding is. Don't learn vocabulary that are not usefull for your every day spoken English and every now and them written one. Look for books that can bring the vocabulary you are going to use, otherwise try to memorize a dictionary. It is full of word and meaning, but nobody does it. If you need science vocab, read sci books, if you are in need of economics vocab a good newspaper will help you, but bare in mind learning is a process that should reach your targets.

Any of the classics. The way to learn words is to look them up when you come across one you don't know. Or you could just memorize SAT vocab lists, and practice using them in sentences.
