If someone wants to cook food for 9 minutes with no breaks. However, they only have a 4 minute and a 7 minute timers. Neither timer has any marks on it, so each can only be used for the full amount of time. How can the two be combined to time 9 minutes?

assuming these are hour glass style of timers

start both timers simultaneously, when the 4 minute timer runs out restart it, when the 7 minute timer runs out start cooking, the 4 minute timer has 1 minute remaining, after the 4 minute timer runs out that last 1 minute restart it 2 more times, (when the 4 minute timer runs out restart it, when the 4 minute timer runs out, you're done) it has been 9 minutes

Start the 7 minute time after the 4 minute timer has ran for 2 minutes
or start the 4 minute timer after the 7 minute has ran for 2 minutes
by the time the second timer goes off the food is done

Start both together.

At 4 mins, restart the 4
At 7 mins, restart the 7
At 8 mins, restart the 4 again
At 12 mins, the 4 ends a third time - START COOKING
At 14 mins, restart the 7
At 21 mins, the 7 ends again. STOP COOKING

The food was cooked for 21 - 12 = 9 minutes.

OR

Go and buy a better timer.
