The American people have a fairly dim view of Congress but do have a high approval rating for their own Congressman. Why?

Because we know our own candidate and consider our candidate to be local, and thus closer to us. Our own candidate is trying to help us. It's all those OTHER congresspersons who keep getting in his/her way :-)

That is a good question.

You can see ,hear and know your own Congressmen Their action appear in local newspapers, radio and TV. They usually attend many meetings in their state and make themselves and their staff readily available. Local Congressman attempt to get laws particularly in the area of budgeting passed that is favorable to their Constituents.

Congress on he other hand has 535 members and is a somewhat unwieldy body with its own political leaders from both political parties. Very often they cannot get a majority of votes for a particular measure with 2/3 needed to override a presidential veto.

Congress represents all parts of our country and does not have nearly the homogeneity of a congressional district or state. Consequently it may pass measures that people in individual states do not like.

Maybe I'm not the person to be answering. My Senator was busted when his phone number was discovered on the DC madams phone bill and my Congressman failed to take action when a page complained to him about Mark Foley. So you see I don't think very highly of Congress or my representatives. And with good reasons.

Pork spending. Their congressmen get money for their State pet projects, but overall, nothing gets done for the people that elect them as a nation.

Most people tend to like "their guy" /"their issues", and believe that the problem lies with the other members.
