It's the religious crazies and our establishment unfortunately.
Back in the 50s, Homosexuality was considered to be a psychological disorder, and now that anyone that tries to consider it a psychological disorder looks like a idiot, what do we have left? OMGZ MORAL PANIC! OMGZ!! ONE! ELEVEN!!
They did the same thing to black people, and they're currently doing the same to fat people: It makes me sick and I'm a Christian too.

B/c we were raised on the idea of the cowboy? Which is where Brokeback Mountain makes a huge stride forward in seeing 2 men holding hands with each other and holding pistols in their other hands. Interesting way to do a shoot out with 2 other gay men I guess. Actually, now that you mention it, I am probably more comfortable watching a MOVIE with 2 guys holding guns than 2 guys holding hands (yeah, it's different and produces a momentary twinge of "Uh oh, social adaption to perform.". It doesn't mean I hate gay people.) BUT I am definitely more comfortable seeing 2 guys holding hands (when they're 10 feet away from me) than 2 guys holding guns (when they're 10 feet away from me). Except on the rifle range. Why? The latest whack job mass murderer/ serial killer is why. I'd rather 2 guys get nekked and 69 than some loon plug me with a .38.

If I were walking down a dark alley (or anywhere in the world, really), I'd feel much more comfortable and much safer if I saw two men holding hands walking toward me than if I saw two men holding guns walking toward me.

Reason? I can defend myself just fine against catcalls and flattery. But I'm not bulletproof.

As a culture though, I completely agree with you and your friends' frustration. Which pair is more threatening to your family?
