Great Britain used to be the master of the seas and ruler of the lands until the early 1900's. Great Britain used to be at the forefront of technology during the Industrial Revolution. How do you feel knowing the fact that Great Britain has lost its colonial territories and lost the prestige it once had? America, a former colony of Great Britain, has surpassed Great Britain in becoming a superpower and is the last remaining superpower on earth. How does it feel knowing Great Britain lost its naval superiority to countries like the United States? Do you ever wish that Great Britain regained the superiority it once had?

What is the need?

With protective treaties like NATO, Great Britain has the security without the expense.

Besides, if Great Britain had a big Navy today, what would be the point? There aren't too many nations floating around out there with threatening armadas any more.

g-day!

I really do. It reduces our own quality of life as residents because Britain has so much less global influence. For example:

1) War with Iraq, need i say more? (not to mention resulting animosity with America)

2) The environment, the two great contributors to global warming; China and America, more influence.

Less politics, more patriotism; i feel as though Brits are slightly degraded (not to mention undermined) by the superpower(s)

Why?
Gb controls money, what is most powerfull than weapons. It can hire enough weapons to face any Issue worldwide.
Folllowing recent past in USA economy (Defict, recent economic crisis, lost of money value in international market) .. well, UK has already started again to rule the world.

Of course, Europe as a community has better chances in long shot, but who cares about next 50 years? Everything will be underwater anyway.

Cheers,

why would u want britain to be an empire? to rule over over countries? its sad!!! would u like to be ruled by china or america or better still a country in africa? i think not!!!
The atrocities committed by britain in the slave trade and gold and diamond trade in countries like south africa, where it supported apartheid and in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe or Zambia.. i forget) where heinous. In fact, Rhodesia was so called after the man that initiated the plundering, Sir Cecil Rhodes. Can u imagine, Sir?? Cos he took away the sovereignty of a nation for gold in the name of the "empire"? what a crock of bull!!!
Rule brittania??? I hope not!!!
Prince Charles had the effrontery to say "and such is the end of empire" at the handing over of hong kong in the 1990's. In the 1990's!!!! How would u like to be ruled in by another country another nation in this day and age?
Forget empire, its a sordid past and best buried where it is. Im african and my country was once under colonial rule b4 my birth, i have no desire to leave that legacy on anyone or 4 it to be bestowed on anyone.
Thank u very much!!!

Frankly this has to be a question from an America and one that doesn't understand the term empire let alone industrial revolution. America does not have an empire so has not surpassed the UK in that even if the Bush Government and their christian-fundamentalist cronies want to create one in the so called American century.

Britain in its days of Empire was highly skilled at all types of diplomacy (with or without a Gun boat) the same cannot be said for the Americans and frequently this leads them to defeat on the battlefield such as Vietnam, Iraq and no doubt future conflicts (such as Iran). Britain also had to contend with numerous other imperial powers all with the potential and proximity to invade, something that the USA does not have to contend with. The list included the German Empire, France, Spain, Holland.

Britain gained an Empire over centuries as it was the leading industrial power for a couple of centuries. It backed it up with a small professional army that (using a model from the Romans in particular) recruited local troops to fight for the Empire. Many such countries in the Empire were highly successful militarily such as Scotland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and India. In contrast with the exception of South Korea the USA has shown itself to be incapable of similar feats. The British Navy, after defeating two European super-powers at the same time in Spain and France at Trafalgar enjoyed two centuries of domination of the seas which made the projection of Imperial Power easier. Todate the USA has never fought and one against any country at Sea with anything like similar resources.

The Pacific war was one where the US (due to its years of sitting back making a profit from WW2 before it arrived on its doorstep) was able to develop technlogy far in advance of anything the Japanese fleets had.

The War in the Atlantic was largely won with British and Canadian planes and ships (some were lend-lease I agree but the sailors were not!). In the mediterranean the British defeated the Italian Navy which was large in one air attack and then controlled the sea to enable victory in the desert.

In terms of population and land mass the UK had no right to control such a large part of the globe but it did and infact left the colonies as independent countries on peaceful terms. The same can't be said of the French or Spanish for example. For this reason we have the Commonwealth. The USA doesn't seem likely to ever enjoy this honour.

I know no one (British) who wants to create a British Empire once again even if it were possible as it smacks of occupation, oppression, exploitation and is out-moded in the extreme. Today, the Americans don't seem to understand that the days of occupying distant countries without serious and constant casualities is impossible, with or with Al-Queda and similar organisations as terrorism or freedom fighting (you decide) is highly accessible. To that end again America has not surpassed the British achievements.

In closing perhaps the most telling factor of all is that to this day the international prestige (as you call it) of Britain although I would call it influence is still felt on every continent whether it is in trade, politics, language, the arts, democracy, diplomacy or sport I doubt whether the USA on its current path with be able to say the same as it tries and fails to resuccitate the old ideas of Empire.

Perhaps the truth is that the USA needs little old Britain to guide it a bit more than it would care to admit?

YES, america only has a handful of useable brain cells in the entire country, the UK may have done terrible things in the past, but the USA is doing it now, guided by a muppet, no insult to Kermit intended.

in this day and age hopefully we can begin to understand superiority is not only gaged by possessing empires and people, but in surpassing living conditions, promoting peace and intelligence.

im not trying to be offending, but im sure most brits prefer our position in the world, rather than the 'superpowers' america and china.

Not that much. Just think if one thing changed in history, nothing these days would be the same. And if they had won the Revalutionary war, there would have probably been more wars then there already have been. I think everything worked out just the way that it was supposed to.

I don't.
Britain was a major player in the African slave trade. It performed genocide against Native Americans (including biological warfare with smallpox blankets).
Britain forced addictive drugs (opium) into China.
It defended Apartheid in South Africa.
It deported its own poor people to Australia, where many of them exterminated Aboriginal people by 95%.

Britain has plundered and raped other nations around the world like pirates.

The world is a better place without Britain in control.
