The lyrics of the song describe a hotel where "you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave." On the surface, the song is a tale of a weary traveler who becomes trapped in a nightmarish hotel that at first appeared tempting. There are many urban legends about the meaning of this metaphor. The song is generally thought to be about the hedonism and self-destruction in the Southern California music industry, as well as Hollywood.

The song "Hotel California" was simply a metaphor for the 1970's excessive and materialistic high life found in Los Angeles (and the world) as depicted by those mid-western boys (Glen Frey, Don Henley, etc) - the Eagles.

I was once told that the song was about a satanic religion. The "hotel" is the church, the Beast is the "devil", and so on. Supposedly the Eagles stumbled upon this "church" while driving in the desert. It is also supposedly one of those songs that if you play it backwards you can hear subliminal messages.

it is about making a desision and then not liking the road that you are stuck on. you can't go back and change the choice, but you want to go back to the way you life was before. hope i helped!
