I live in the town, with that Bridge...have seen it when it was on TV for the first time... Too close for comfort is the betrayal, and what they did to my dad to make him sign the peace documents. The 2 German Generals that decided they would give in for Germany on May 3d 1945, decided they could not trust the Prins Bernard, nor put their faith in the allies. My Dad, was lifted of his bed in Apeldoorn, by the MP´s and brought to Wageningen, to witness and co/sign The Peace Treaty, after which he was brought back and my Mum and Dad could have their Wedding on the 5th our National Liberation Day. Nobody ever wondered anymore. I had a memory of a historical news Item from something we call Polygoon News not long ago and remember Princess Juliana getting engaged..... Prins Bernard takes his Intended to See Hitler in the Arendsnest high in the Alps. I must be getting old for these things to cloud my minds eye.....
My Favourite War film is a documentary called the Dam Busters. The action in the movie is the real thing. The sacrifice of these British pilots, made a huge impression on me when i saw it in England on TV.
In 2007 The impact is still as strong as the day I saw these brave men taking off to surely die

I have to go with Patton because it was so well done overall and remains one of my favorite movies. Full Metal Jacket is a close second.
This is a great question, and I would like to add honorable mention to Band of Brothers. Not a movie per say, but worth entry into the discussion

My favourite war film, and best film of all time is 'Life Is Beautiful', an Italian made film by Roberto Benigni (Who also plays the main character in the film). If you haven't seen it you must (you can get it from any video shop). You have the option of watching it in English, but I prefer to watch it in Italian with English subtitles.
It's the most successful foreign film ever made - with Roberto Benigni sweeping the board at the Oscars in the late 90's.
Here's the link with more info on it...
