It has become an epidemic. Many of the old Bush regulars, most of them close friends, have left the Bush Administration for private life. Countless government posts have no leadership, some of them operating under "acting" chiefs. Could this be because of the unpopularity of the Bush regime, or perhaps disagreement with his handling of the issues? Bush was noticeably angry over the departure of Alberto Gonzales and, with his friends gone, including Wolfovitz who was forced to resign from the UN, could it be that Bush, like Richard Nixon, finds those White House halls very lonely?

No, he misses his friends but he's aware of how many days are left in his 2nd term. I bet serving as president is one of the most difficult taks to handle. He's way to busy and way to many people see him to court his favor daily.

I believe Richard Nixon was more of a solitary individual than most politicians and much more sensitive than his public image portrayed.

Bush's chief f staff told all his people that if they weren't planning to stay through the end of his term, they should get out before Labor Day. Karl Rove will end up working for the GOP in some capacity related to the 2008 election. Snow left for personal health reasons. Gonzalez was the only one, I think, that irked Bush, since Gonzo left despite Bush's constant ringing endorsements.

But, as others pointed out, it is fairly common for people to leave near the end of a second-term presidency to go and help out with the campaign to keep the White House. Bush is a president whose time has come and gone. If people want to stay on top, they have to leave the departing administration and try to maneuver a spot in the new one, should that occur.

Ever watch 'The West Wing'? How many of the usual cast were still working in the White House during the final season? That's art imitating life.
