Weight is the number one tip-off that something is crystal rather than glass. The lead in crystal makes it is heavier than cut glass. Also, another way to tell crystal from glass is that crystal will 'ping' when you flick your fingernail against crystal.. glass will not.

by the ring. tap (very lightly) the vase with something metal (again, very lightly) and if it's glass it will make a quick little "tink" sound. crystal will be a more drawn out "tong" type of sound that will echo or last longer the the glass.
