My son is four weeks old and for the last three days has started having hard stools. He cries and fusses just before and then he has a small hard stool. He is going about every three hours. Does anyone know anything to do for him. Also he is having alot of gas.

I havent changed anything with formula or added anything new to it.

The iron in the formula maybe causing the constipation. Go to your doctor. He will probably recommend giving him a little bit of extra water each day to help soften his poops. See the doc though before taking anyone elses advice (including mine). I know lots of people are telling you water but at 4 weeks old you can end up giving him a sodium imbalance cause his kidneys arent developed like an adults...which could be fatal. Listen to how much water is safe via doctors advice. Also giving juice this early isnt good advice either. His digestive system isnt ready for that.

My kids were the same way, and my doctor said they do NOT need water, they get it from the water mixed with the formula. I also think he is too young for juice.
We added Caro Syrup to every bottle it works as a stool softener. My kids used this the whole time they were on the bottle, well at least until age 1.
Call and ask your doctor first, I think it was about a tablespoon with every bottle. We just put it in with the formula.

My baby had this same promblem and i am goingt o read off a form they he had given me to fix the promblem....if it does not fix the promblem in 3 days then u r to call the doctor....... This may be repeated once the next day if necessary,. if the babys remains the same then give the baby 1/4 teaspoon of Milk of Magnesia each mkorning and evening if baby has no bowel movenment or a hard one. If neither remedy works then call the doctor back ! When my daughter was couple weeks ago she had the same problem. A lot of people try different herbal teas for kids to ease this problem I simply used the method that has been used for many generations/
I took a little bit of regular vaseline and put it on the thin end of the termometr and I simply put it gently in the baby's behind.
This method was also recomended to me by my my pediatrician. As soon as your child will develop stronger mussles in the rectrum he will outgrow this problem. It took my child around 2-3 monthes before she did.
Good luck, Best, M

Call the doctor. Four weeks old is young and small...you need to talk to a professional. Don't worry, just get some advice from your doctor. Good luck.

TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR NOW... it will only get worse. My 20 month old has had problems since 4 months! He's seeing a GI specialist next week. He's on RX laxatives... etc.

But, because of your child's age, your doctor may have suggestions for you... like finding a formula with less Iron in it, as Iron is a constipating element... and if you are Breast Feeding... he may have suggestions on which foods to avoid..

You need to see your doctor. Don't try any of these "helpful" people's home remedies without your doctor's approval. A 4 week old should be getting all the fluids he needs from his milk/formula. Please call your peditrician right away and ask them for the answer, this is your babies health and he could be in danger.

babies don't need anything besides breastmilk or formula. you should make an appt. with his ped right now. babies should not have hard stool. maybe he needs something with less iron. obviously that is not the formula for him. are you adding enough water to the formula
