harryd,,,,, You take the prize super answer, Our freedoms have been eroding slowly, small bits cut away very subtely. We have had some horrible legislation encacted since 9-11. There are some problems with the Patriot act. Lots of problems with DHS. These two government blunders, have cost this country dearly. We have damn near expanded government by a 1/4 of its size. States rights damn near no longer exsist, Federal government is micro managing what we do in our everyday lives. This has to stop. This country needs to pull its head out of it's ***, and start tearing down the walls in DC figuratively, Start with calling campaigns, E- mail campaigns Let these elected officals know they are not doing there job, If you have a senator or congressman running for re-election let that person know that your really not happy. list things you want done, get a bunch of people to list things you want done. Call the Congressional members office and voice complaints. Most of all. we need to find a way, to make the positive transition to better government,. We the people are responsible for this mess, Not the damn congress or the President we are. We have been sitting on our hands for the past 30 years and have allowed this **** to happen. So don't blame the guy next to you blame yourself, Now we need some really smart, dedicated people who can help us do the right thing. Repeal bad laws, bolster good laws. Get rid of this damn IRS period,,, this is the Politicans cash cow. . If it comes to it,,,, find a great candidate and form a new party or bolster the Independent party. Make it the big dog on the block.. and only put people in the seats that reflect what you the people want done, and not some asshole congressman.. Well if nothing else I sure feel better.,

The 'mainstream' isn't quite what the media paints it to be. For instance, if you see a statistic like 72% of Americans disaprove of Bush's handling of Iraq, you might think that 'mainstream America' is against the war. But, it might not be. Maybe 28% are for the war, 38% are dead-set against it, 14% think it should have been done with fewer troops and less money, 18% think the war needed to be fought more agressively, and 2% think Iraq should be a radioactive wasteland by now. That would be 62% who don't actually object to the war, itself.
There's been a trend since the 2000 election, though, for both parties to move away from the center, so they're both further from the 'mainstream' than they were.

I think the problem is that EVERYBODY likes to think that THEY represent mainstream America. Even you. You are making the assumption that, because Republicans don't agree with you, they are out of the mainstream. You are incorrect, of course, but it's understandable. Ask any general who ever commanded any army during any war throughout all of history, they always thought God was on their side.
On some issues, the GOP is in the majorty. On some, they are not. That's just the way it goes.

For the same reason the Democratic Party is so far into the enviro-socialism realm.
Both parties play to their hard core constituents during the primary election season. Both parties will try to suck up to the middle of the roader's after the primaries. In the end we will hate them both, that's politics.

The don't think they're out of the mainstream on abortion and "gay" issues, I don't agree with them on those issues, but they have strong support on each, and probably do better than the Democrats, in terms of support on issues like gay marriage. Where they're mostly out of the mainstream is on Iraq, it's what's killing them and it's what will lead to their upcoming huge defeat in 2008. Althogh almost forgotten now, the Terri Shiavo thing made them look like buffoons as well. They also take hits on science issues like evolution vs. "intelligent design" and global warming, but all of that will be secondary to Iraq in the next election.

The media is so anti GOP it is not funny.
Now to your question: Actually, the GOP is the only party that has it right. You should take a closer look at reality and you would see that the GOP is right.

Democrats have no real candidates running. Hillary and Obama. Please, give me a break!!! I rather Hillary, but she won't win because she's a woman. I know its hard, but thats the truth and we know millinons of people still feel that way. And for Obama, well, he'll loose in the primary to Hillary.
