"But what really astounded him was the amount of giving: In 2000, he
says, conservative households gave 30 percent more money to charity
than liberal households."
"It's down the line," he says. "Religious people are 21 percent more
likely to volunteer in explicitly secular causes. They're even twice
as likely to donate blood."

Bible Belt most generous in charitable giving
"PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — New Englanders remain among the most
tightfisted in the country when it comes to charitable giving while
Bible Belt residents are among the most generous, according to an
annual index.
For the fourth year running, New Hampshire was the most miserly
state, according to the Catalogue of Philanthropy's Generosity
Index. Mississippi remained at the top for generosity.
The index, which takes into account both "having" and "giving," is
based on average adjusted gross incomes and the value of itemized
charitable donations reported to the Internal Revenue Service on
2003 tax returns, the latest available."

notice how you got beat up by people who do not even want to look at the facts. churches may not be a charity but each year my little church gives about five thousand dollars to the local food bank. we do a neighborhood clean up once a year. we have a food bank within our church that feeds about 26-30 families a month. we do alot of charitable things with the money we receive in tithes. i have no answer except they do not want to help or share with the less fortunate.ironic huh?sort of the same way they proclaim free speech from the mountain tops yet persecute those with different ideas. ref; daily kos.

The answer's in the question: it's because they're on average a bit more religious than Dems. Religious people give more to charity - religious or secular - while the irreligious either want to keep thier money for themselves, or try to address the same problems that charities do, colletively, through government.
That last strategy has proven very effective. A million dollars given to a charity might get 900,000 dollars of benefit to the people who need it, but, a million dollars given to a lobbying organization might get a 100 million dollar program from the government, and, even if it's 10% efficient in delivering the goods, that still 10 million dollars of benefit reaching the people who need it. Effective, mind you, not efficient...

The only reason they give to charities is so the jerks can write it off on their taxes. Why not just pay the friggin taxes and quit complaining? I pay my taxes and hope the money gets put to good use. I'm rather frugal with many "charities" cause they have staff and overhead to pay for that cuts into every donation, plus whatever the CEO can hack out. Besides, many charities are having to pick up the slack for govenment cause of budget cuts and restraints. The people the charities are helping should already be being helped by government programs. You shouldn't have to admit you're a born again christian whacko to get a good meal in a country that lets more food rot than many countries produce.
Wow, that just went everywhere, didn't it?

again, something we aren't supposed to know.I'm a Republican Industrialist ( thankfully the Libs can no longer burn us at the stake).I'm the Commander of an American Legion Post,The Director of an American Legion Riders Unit,a Life member of the Legion as well as the Veteran's of Foreign Wars,A member of the Patriot Guard, donate 1000's to charity, donate blood(3 gal so far)hire the handicapped and hire through the Salvation Army.
According to some,I'm the cause of America's problems;my bad.
Added:
Noticed the "thumbs down" rating. As I've always said,Libs are the most intolerant group out there. Many good people in this country go above and beyond to help people;and yet because we choose to believe in the Republican party and tend to have conservative views,we are frowned upon by the "enlightened ones".So be it.

Outcrop, pay attention dude. The news items the lady quoted clearly states "secular causes" and giving blood, etc..
I think the answer is down to philosophy. "Conservatives" prefer to make their own choices with their money... the would rather pay less in taxes, but not because they are greedy but because they believe they have a right to make their own choices about their money. "Liberals" are probably no more "tight-fisted" than conservatives. But they believe the Government should spend the money for them. Liberals are pretty happy to pay a higher percentage of their income in taxes.

And time.
I used to volunteer at two shelters, I was the only volunteer (that was there by choice not court order) that wasn't a self proclaimed Cristian Conservative.
Of course there are plenty of generous people on the left too.

Because Republicans have more of their money, who cares
how generous they are ? What I'd like to know is, why are
the Democrats, with all their freebie government programs
are so generous with OUR money ?

Because, unlike the left, I worked for mine, no one gave it to me. Henceforth I have more and I'm willing to give it away, as long as no one tells me where to give it.......
