or can you tape the pieces together and still use it like you can with money. mind you, this check was ripped cleanly into two pieces. and its for my rent.

If your landlord wants to try and take it to the bank tape-up, and the bank accepts it, then it is 'good'.

One thing the bank would look for is that the numbers on the bottom line up correctly. They are printed with special magnetic ink for machines to 'read' them.

No, but I wouldn't take that check. In this area of law, Commercial Paper, anything that would put a person on notice that the check was overdue or had been altered in any way would make that person liable under a warranty theory if they transferred the check to someone else and the bank would not honor it.

The rip would probably serve as notice of a problem with the check, so you are going to have a hard time passing it. Just write out another one.

If you wrote the check you should be able to just initial it. If it's a check someone else issued you, you may have to get another one. Can you just void it and write another one?

Yes....no Bank in its right mind would accept a check that had been ripped in half.
